Apply Tiling

Tiling plays an important part in dynamic mapping. The objective of tiling a layer is to minimise the amount of layer data that has to be loaded in order to display an area of interest in the shortest possible time.

Typically, this technique is used on layers where only a fairly small percentage of the layer is ever going to be viewed at one time. Only the tiles of the layer that intersect the extent to be displayed need to be loaded. All other tiles in the layer can simply be ignored.

MapLink Pro Studio allows the definition of a regular grid of tiles for each layer in the map. When using resolution based layer loading MapLink Pro Studio will automatically choose tiling settings based on when each layer will be visible. When using tile based layer loading and no manual tiling is defined, a single tile will be produced on output map creation, covering the full extent of the layer.

Tiling is only performed when creating the output map, and is the final operation performed once the layer has been created from its constituent parts.

images/proctool.bmpTo set up a tiling grid for a Layer

  • Select the Layer
  • Use Layer | Tiling...to open the Tiling page
  • Enter the number of tiles required in both X and Y directions
  • Press OK to accept the changes
  • The view of the layer will be updated to show the new tiling arrangement

If the tiling of the layer is not visible, you will need to define a suitable rendering for the built-in Layer Overview feature class. To do this, open the Feature Book and go to the Reference section.

The example below shows the result of applying tiling to a layer. The dashed blue lines show the tile boundaries.
