What is a Dataset?

A dataset is a group of files that share a common format and coordinate system. Usually all the data files added to a dataset will have been provided by the same data provider, so the term also corresponds to normal GIS usage.

A dataset has the following properties, which can be defined or accessed separately for each dataset in a layer:

  • Dataset Type. This is the fundamental property of the dataset; it cannot be changed. The dataset type determines the import filter is used to read in the data. MapLink supports a wide range of vector and raster datasets.
  • Input Clipping. You may not wish to load all the data that is contained in the input data files contained within the dataset, because some of the data lies outside your area of interest. MapLink therefore allows you to clip the data in the dataset to a rectangle defined in the input

  • Datum Transformation. This can be applied separately or in conjunction with a projection and datum (grouped together under Dataset (Input) Coordinate System).

  • Input Coordinate System. This provides access to projection and datum settings for the dataset. Together with an optional Linear Transformation, these allow you to specify the precise coordinate system that applies to the dataset. The ability to combine data from datasets in different coordinate systems is one of the powerful features of MapLink Pro Studio.

  • Feature Book Section. This provides access to Feature Book Section configuration options. Currently only a single option is supported:

  • changing the Feature Book section configuration for the dataset;

  • Feature Masking. Like input clipping, feature masking allows you to ignore data within the input data files that is not of interest to you. In this case data is included or excluded on the basis of its feature class.

  • Vector Configuration or Raster Configuration, as relevant. This can be applied to the entire dataset, although it is normally applied at the data file level. If applied at the dataset level, it will be overridden on a file-by-file basis as necessary.

  • Format configuration, where relevant. Certain filters have configuration panels that allow the filter to be configured to add value to the data. Again, whilst this can be applied to the entire dataset, it is normally applied at the data file level. If applied at the dataset level, it will be overridden on a file-by-file basis as necessary.

In addition, Raster Datasets, Vector Datasets and Terrain Datasets all have their own individual properties. Product Datasets are also available.
